Sanbell (formerly Bellecci & Associates) provided topographic surveying and civil design services for a multi-year roadway and intersection improvement project in Oakland, California. The work involved upgrading three signalized intersections and modifying a State Route off-ramp. In addition, Sanbell provided services in widening and re-profiling the Webster Tube exit to improve traffic efficiency and multimodal safety.
A key feature of the project was the addition of a Class 1 bikeway and enhanced pedestrian crossings. Sanbell successfully led the design exception process to implement a signalized crosswalk at a Caltrans off-ramp — significantly improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists navigating a high-traffic corridor.
Additional design elements focused on aesthetics, stormwater management, and urban placemaking. These included:
-
Decorative retaining walls and a City gateway monument
-
Landscape medians and stormwater treatment areas
-
A new bus and transit stop with improved walkability and access
The improvements support safer travel for drivers, cyclists, transit users, and pedestrians while enhancing the visual character of this dense urban corridor.
